Artist's Statement

Recent Work / 2015 - present

I create strange, humorous, sometimes subversive portraits of people in clay. Informed by carnival and circus, Bruegel and magical realism, sacred objects and folktales, and my life roles as artist and psychotherapist; using the bust, figure, and mask; and referencing puppets and dolls with their exaggerated physicality, my work explores what it means to be human in a complex world—one pairing love/loss, compassion/suffering, attraction/repulsion, belonging/exclusion. Fundamentally, I honor authenticity and depth in the human encounter, whatever the reality. I work to integrate an individual’s essence with archetypical elements embodying this uniquely human being.
